What is Image Optimization?
Image optimization is the process of optimizing photos, graphics and other images so that they load quickly on a web page, utilize the format that renders the image the best and adjusting certain attributes of the images to help the web page they appear on rank well in the major search engines.
What steps should your take to optimize your images? Well generally there are six steps:
- Use keywords in the filename of your image. If you sell t-shirts and the image is a t-shirt with a hawk graphic on it, an example might be: hawk-tshirt.jpg rather than naming it image0001.jpg.
- Use keywords in the alt tag and title tag of the image html markup. Like this:
<img src="hawk-tshirt.jpg" title="hawk t-shirt" alt="hawk t-shirt" />
- Keep the image positioned on the web page close to where the keyword relation to the image resides.
- Use the right image format and size. If you only need an image to be 120 pixels by 120 pixels, then resize that image to exactly that size. Also if an image can be reduced in size by changing the image format without compromising image quality, then do it. A good example is using a GIF image rather than using a JPEG, when a GIF will suffice.
- Limit the number of images per page. They will slow down load times and cause visitors to grow impatient and leave your web site.
- Use photo sharing sites and apply captions and tags to them.
